5 ways we plan to use Microsoft Office Graph

Microsoft Office Graph has been discussed in the corridors and offices for Microsoft for quite a while. Satya Nadella is on record as saying that Office Graph is one of the most exciting developments to come out of Microsoft for a while.

Much has subsequently been written about Office Graph and how it works; it’s potential to transform how business work and interact with their data. Here are 5 ways we plan to integrate Office Graph in our products and client projects.

Trending Files vNext

Many projects use audit logs or search analytics to provide users with a view of files with the most views. Whilst this is a useful tool to promote content your business is viewing it’s very generic. By using Office Graph trending files can be transformed in to something more personal to the user. Office Graph is aware of your connections with other users and interaction with files therefore provides more tailored results.

My Files

Office Graph as described tracks your file access and usage. It can therefore be used to provide a view of files you’re working on or have recently viewed. This can be implemented as a quick access list to get you working on those important files again.

My Colleagues

Office Graph can be used for discoverability. It’s not just tracking you, it’s tracking your whole organisation. Organisations who are geographically dispersed can use it help identify colleagues working on similar topics or interacting with the same colleagues. For example, in my world I could be writing this blog on Office Graph and it may flag that a colleague of mine in the US is also working on documents with the term Office Graph. This is extremely powerful and improve collaboration in the organisation and provide an organisation chart based on current projects or topics instead of reporting structure.

Single View of Office 365

Office Graph goes deeper and wider than the standard SharePoint Search. It steps up to tenant level and brings in other types of content such as OneNote content, SharePoint Sites and Yammer Conversations. This provides a much richer set of results such as the experience provided by Microsoft Delve. Delve is the service Microsoft built to make use of Office Graph and provide rich views of your organisation’s interactions.

Integration of non-O365 data

Office Graph allows developers to push signals from systems outside of O365. Office Graph will then include these signals in its machine learning algorithms and incorporate them it’s results. This is an amazing opportunity for system integrators (SI) to push data from HR, financial or social systems. We will be pushing signals from our Unily products in to Office Graph therefore allowing users to view trending Unily content and discover Unily content being looked at or created by their colleagues.

It’s early days for Office Graph, as of writing this article it’s still in preview, but it’s a very exciting area of development one which Microsoft is investing in and improving at a rapid pace.
